Soil health indicator: % of ground within quadrat which is bare soil

What proportion of the sampled area is bare ground (that which is exposed soil, i.e. not covered by litter or leaves). Areas uncovered by mulch or vegetation are vulnerable to degradation. Estimate the percentage you see and record in the app!

How to do the test

1. Decide whether you want to test randomly within a block, or repeatedly at the same specific sample site over time (you can use the GPS feature to return to the same place each time).

2. Stand above the quadrat and visually estimate what percentage of the area you see is bare soil (uncovered by mulch or vegetation).

3. Record this number in your Sectormentor app at the relevant location.

4. Take a photo if you haven’t already for future reference!
